Slow Fashion Movement

Slow Fashion Movement

The Slow Fashion Movement is based on the slow movement that was an onslaught on the McDonald’s food chain. The Slow Movement is a concept that was coined to balance the voraciously consumerist approach towards Food, Clothing and Shelter especially with an intention to re-infuse lost moral values into the materialistic ways of living. The goal of the Slow Down movement was to reverse the abrasive trend of growing modernism. The movement took shape for the first time in the form of Carlo Perini’s protest against the Fast Food movement of McDonalds in 1986 which resulted in the formation of the Slow Food Organization.

As a continuation of this trend, the Slow Down movement caught up with the Fashion World and in 2007 the concept of Slow Fashion Came into Vogue. As the name suggests, the Slow Fashion Movement has been catching momentum in the past 6 years or so. The concept has been very slow to catch up but it is designed on moralistic value with a view to be everlasting and promises to leave a lasting impact on the World of fashion. The concept has its fundamentals deeply rooted in Values. Slow Fashion is currently focussing on the following elements.

  • Getting into the groove of sustainable fashion, Slow fashion is committed towards using materials that are obtained in an ethical manner
  • The use of Fur obtained through killing of endangered species or through causing damages to animals is discouraged. The use of Beaver fur in particular is severely opposed in Fashion shows that are held in accordance with the Slow fashion Movement
  • Environmental Welfare is one of the primary goals of this movement. There is precedence given to natural fibres and the use of synthetic material is extremely limited. The concept of renewable fibres is in extreme favour in the movement
  • Sustainable fashion and the Slow Fashion Movement are synonymous and use of nasty chemicals and dyes is prohibited.
  • Garments used and disposed in Fashion Shows are up cycled and products of higher value are being created as a sustainable practice in the movement
  • Donating clothes and other Fabric to the needy is an aimed at goal in the Slow Fashion circles
  • The use of Leather is condemned and alternate products are used as a replacement. Innovation Technology is leveraged towards this end
  • The Garment market is focused mostly in doing away with middle men who hike up the price and thereby cause flutters in the Fashion economy.
  • The Do-it-Yourself concept which focuses more on Fashion designers actually doing and managing all aspects of their garment /Product design themselves is a focal point.
  • The above concept thereby prolongs the time in between fashion shows and eliminates too many third party companies making a quick buck.
  • Fashion shows are focused more towards ethical and Value based themes that will help regulate the degradation of values in modern society
  • Encouraging people to buy fewer clothes less often thereby constricting the rapid fashion based changes that’s happening in the world.

Slow Fashion is thus the newest face of Sustainable fashion and one that supports the Green Revolution in Toto. Thus the axe is on the Retail supply chain tentacles and on the trends and Seasonal Fashion Shows. Quality over Quantity has been the dictum of Sustainable fashion or the Slow Fashion movement.
